Quality Improvement Community of Learning

AIM partnered with the National Institute for Children’s Health Quality (NICHQ) to develop a Quality Improvement Community of Learning to provide participants with foundational knowledge and skills in quality improvement principles. This learning series is for professionals with limited experience in QI projects.

QI COL 2023

Cohort 1 and Cohort 2

Session 1: The What and Why of Improvement: Foundations of Quality Improvement

This webinar explores why and how improvement science contributes to improved outcomes, including clinical outcomes. Participants will review prominent improvement models with a focus on the value of an aim statement and how to write an aim statement that includes what needs to be improved, for whom and how much improvement is needed. They will learn how the Model for Improvement can be used as a robust stand-alone improvement roadmap or used to optimize other improvement methodologies.

Session 2: Activating the How: PDSA Cycles

During this session, we will cover the third question in the Model for Improvement: What change can we make that will result in improvement? We will begin with where to find changes and how to organize them using a Driver Diagram and Change Package. Finally, we will cover the basic concepts you need to know to then take those changes and run successful PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) cycles to test and learn from them. We will start with how to plan and conduct small-scale tests of change and how to gradually adjust the size and scope of the PDSA tests over time.

Session 3: Measurement for Improvement

During this session, we will review the types of measures that are helpful for improvement projects followed by how to plot and analyze data using a run chart. We will discuss the difference between random and non-random variation and present rules for detecting what type of variation is present in a process.

Session 4: Holding the Gains: Sustaining Improvement and Cohort Learning

This session will focus on important considerations for any improvement project after testing and implementing changes as to hold onto the improvement and not digress. We will talk briefly about some key spread components. Participants will have the opportunity to share what they have learned and developed as result of the sessions.

QI COL 2022

To strengthen and support knowledge and understanding of Quality Improvement (QI) methodology, AIM partnered with the National Institute for Children’s Health Quality (NICHQ) to develop a Quality Improvement Community of Learning (COL). The Community of Learning covered topics related to The Model for Improvement, PDSA cycles, using data for improvement, spreading improvement, and sustainability.
