Health systems providing perinatal care face many of the same quality and safety challenges, including the all too common “reactive quality” approach that does not yield transformational change. In this webinar, Debra Bingham, DrPH, RN, FAAN, and Jesse McCall, MBA, from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) will introduce a Whole System Quality (WSQ) approach that healthcare leaders can apply in their organizations. Whole System Quality integrates leadership principles that foster engagement, learning, psychological safety, and systems thinking with management practices that support quality planning, quality control, and focused improvement efforts. Together, these elements create the conditions for sustained performance and better outcomes for patients, families, staff, and communities. Presenters will describe the key components of Whole System Quality, explore their application in maternal health settings, and share examples from organizations working to improve maternal outcomes and experiences.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define Whole System Quality and the leadership principles required for healthcare leaders to support it
- Describe how quality planning, quality control, and quality improvement work together within a Whole System Quality approach
- Identify opportunities to apply Whole System Quality principles and practices to advance maternal health outcomes within their organizations.
